Razor's Traitorous Heart & Hunter's Claim (Alliance Books 1 & 2) by S.E. Smith Reviews
In the second book of the Alliance series Razor's Traitorous Heart we get Hunter's oldest brother Razor's story. Razor is a serious warrior with an intimidating reputation for quelling uprisings and smoothing the path when native insurgents make the transition to a peaceful pact with the Alliance difficult. The city of Chicago hold the last of the hold outs in the large city and Razor is sent to either accept a surrender or destroy the city and all of it's inhabitants. Kali and her brother Destin are fighting to keep a rival group of holdouts from taking over and destroying what is left of their home. Kali, like Jesse in book 1, is in a position to save a Travitor warrior in need and risks her life to save Razor after the helicopter that he is traveling in is shot down.
Razor's Traitorous Heart is another fun installment of the Alliance series and now more than ever I am looking forward to seeing who will be next in line to get their own book. Will it be the spitfire Taylor and the disgruntled and damaged Saber, or will we finally get Jordan and Dagger's book? Oh, the possibilities. One of the things that I appreciate about this series is that Smith is able to deliver a complete and satisfying book centered around one couple while pulling the threads of the secondary characters further out to tempt the reader into the next book in the series. Well done Smith! I will definitely be looking out for book 3!

Razor’s Traitorous Heart
The Alliance, Book 2
Kali Parks is a shadow in the war between two factions that are fighting to gain control of Chicago. Born and raised on the streets, she stands as a silent sentinel at her brother’s side as he battles to gain control. She will do whatever it takes to bring peace to those she has pledged her life to protect, including fighting against the creatures that came to their world almost six years before.
Razor, a councilman for the Alliance, has been sent to oversee the remaining Trivator troops on Earth and make sure the transition for the induction of Earth into the Alliance goes smoothly. He is the one the Alliance calls when they have a situation that needs to be resolved once and for all. His reputation for dealing with difficult rebels is renowned. He asks no questions and takes no prisoners. His job is to eliminate all threats to the Alliance.
He finds himself torn between duty and something he is unfamiliar with, his heart. When a shadow warrior saves his life and disappears, he discovers his world is no longer as cut and dry as he thought. The more he learns, the more he discovers he is not immune to the warrior’s passionate desire to fight to protect her people.
Forced by duty to settle the conflict, he must decide between the Alliance and his own desire to claim the unwilling warrior. When the conflict escalates, he does the only thing he can; he makes a pact with one of the factions in exchange for a prize that will surely cause a battle of a different kind – the one for his traitorous heart.
Will he be able to claim her before she escapes from him again? Or worse, will she sacrifice her life to protect those she loves before he can?
Teaser from Razor's Traitorous Heart
Lifting her legs up, she found a good foothold and reached up to grab the back of his seat. The move had her straddling his legs and her forehead pressed firmly against his. She knew that he was going to be pissed with what she was about to do but there was no time for making the task at hand any easier. The moment he released her hand, she gripped the metal shard in his leg and pulled it out as quickly as possible.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, staring into his eyes. “I’m so sorry.”
She dropped the blade of metal, letting it fall through the shattered glass to the ground below. Readjusting her position, she reached into her back pocket and pulled out the bandanna that she sometimes used to hold her hair back. It was barely long enough when folded diagonally to wrap around his thigh.
She hated having to hurt him but some instinct told her that they were running out of time if they were going to get out of this alive. She needed him to be able to move and he wouldn’t be able to with a spear of metal in his leg. She glanced up as she finished tying the strip of cloth.
His head was pressed back against the seat, not an easy thing to do considering he was hanging by a few straps. His face was pale and his lips were pressed together so tightly they were almost white. His eyes had turned to a darker gold. It was the look of pain, anger and exhaustion shining in them that pulled at her sympathetic heart. She knew all too well all of those feelings.
She reached up and touched his cheek before pressing her lips lightly against his. It was the only thing she could think of to give him a moment of comfort. Resting her forehead against his again, she reached down and grasped the buckle holding the straps together.
Hunter's Claim was a fun fantasy read. Smith introduces the Trivator warriors. After the Trivator warriors arrive on Earth, citizens of Earth no longer have to wonder if we are alone in the universe. However, chaos and war erupts and the world governments and civilization fail and life on Earth will never be the same. Although the Travitor warriors are trying to help humans as much as possible by providing food, shelter, and protection through the Alliance, there are still many people who do not trust the aliens and want to use the continued chaos to spread anarchy and take over territories for themselves.
In Hunter's Claim we are introduced to Jesse who is a young woman determined to protect and care for her two younger sisters Jordan and Taylor. Because the girls have lost both parents they have to stick together and not only find shelter and food in a now dangerous world, but they must hide away from both alien and humans alike. Despite her fear of the aliens and their unknown intentions, Jesse risks her own life to save the life of Hunter, a Travitor warrior that is captured by a roving band of humans who are out to find ways of killing the alien "invaders". Although grateful for her help, Hunter has different plans for Jesse.
Although the story is a bit on the shorter side, Smith is not only able to give a complete and satisfying fantasy story, but she is able to incorporate good world building as well. There's enough information about the Alliance, the Travitor warriors and their culture to keep the reader interested. There are sex scenes, but they are not overly erotic or descriptive, but just enough to keep the story spicy. There are holes that I hope will be filled in as the series continues, but that is part of the fun of reading a fantasy series. Hunter's Claim isn't an overly complicated story that will take a large amount of time to get through. However, it was a fun, sexy read and I looked forward to moving on to book 2 Razor's Traitorous Heart. The story is plotted so that each sister will get her own story and it is clear how the pairing will go. The fun in reading these will be to see how each of the sisters get their warrior and the chase that will ensue.
